Sometimes it can be difficult in selecting the best cut flowers for your bouquet or garden. Deciding what flowers to put in your garden can be a daunting experience. There are many factors to keep in mind such as height of the flower, colors, and when the flowers blossom throughout the season.


The attendant at the garden department of the local mega mart is typically not going to know what kind of garden you would like, so knowing what you want the space to look like beforehand can make planting a much easier task.


Here are a few flower varieties that are found in classic American gardens. Marigolds- these flowers are found in yellow, orange and red varieties or a combination. They blossom about 40 days from sowing them and don’t require very much water other than normal rainfall.


  1. Morning Glory: Morning Glories have delicate heart shaped petals and come in a variety of colors such as red, blue, pink and lavender. This flower can grow very large, sometimes even as much as 6 feet tall.
  2. Zinnias: These are traditional, resilient and beautiful flowers that blossom very frequently all throughout the season. This flower will need more watering than most. It requires rainfall every few days so if it is a dry season make sure to water them frequently.
  3. Sunflowers: These are a classical necessity to any flower garden. They have willowish orange petals with a black circle in the middle. These flowers typically grow large, frequently over 7 feet tall. Their seeds are edible and in fact are quite delicious when roasted. In order for your garden to be the best it can be it’s going to take some attention and love.


Work in your garden as frequently as possible, trimming, watering and removing weeds. With a properly maintained garden you can have a free source of fresh cut flowers for many month out of the year.
